Learn More About Miami Theater Next Weekend
As one of the most visited places in the US, the Miami area is also one of the best places for theater in the southeast. Miami is a great place to catch a Broadway show and a variety of other live performances.
Miami is home to the second largest performing arts center in the US: the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. The Arsht Center is one of the Miami theater scene’s newer venues. The center opened in 2006 in Downtown Miami. It was built on the site of a famous Art-Deco-style Sears, Roebuck, and Company store. Most of the store was demolished before the Arsht Center’s construction, but the performing arts center has incorporated a seven-foot tower from the historic Sears location into its design. The center houses a number of venues and is home to the Florida Grand Opera and the Miami City Ballet. Between all of its venues, the center hosts over 400 performances in a year. Most of the major theater productions, like Broadway in Miami, happen in the Ziff Ballet Opera House. The Arsht Center also hosts Theater Up Close—smaller performances produced by the center.
You’ll also have theater options to the north of Miami: the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, located in nearby Ft. Lauderdale, provides even more options for Broadway and theater in south Florida. Over 700,000 people visit the Broward Center each year, and the center holds over 700 annual performances. The center opened in 1991 to a rousing performance of The Phantom of the Opera in front of 2700 people at the Au-Rene Theater.
Where’s the best place to see a show in Miami?
It’s a safe bet to go to whichever performing arts center is closer. The Arsht Center is in Downtown Miami, and the Broward Center is about 40 minutes to the north in Ft. Lauderdale. But if you don’t mind making the trip, don’t let the drive stop you from going to a show you want to see.
