About Shows in Atlanta
Atlanta is one of the best cities in the country for live entertainment. Not many cities can say they have permanent companies for opera, ballet and theater, but you can find it all in Atlanta. Touring Broadway shows also often find their way to Atlanta. The city’s performing arts venues are mostly located in Midtown Atlanta: the Fox Theatre, Woodruff Arts Center, and the Ferst Center for the Arts are all in the area.
The Fox Theatre is Atlanta’s top destination for Broadway shows. The theater originally opened as a movie palace in the late 1920s. Its ornate design was inspired by Far East religious temples. The movie palace eventually closed, but the Atlanta community stepped in to raise over three million dollars to save the theater, which currently runs as a non-profit. The Fox frequently ranks in the top three theaters in terms of ticket sales, cementing its place as one of the country’s best places for theater.
The Alliance Theatre, which won a Regional Theatre Tony Award in 2007, runs shows for all ages. Adults can see stage productions of Shakespeare in Love, or Candide, while families with young children can enjoy shows like The Jungle Book and Alice Between. Alliance even has shows for kids who are too young to sit through a full-length play. The Kathy and Ken Bernhardt Theatre for the Very Young puts on shows aimed at children five years old and younger. Kids are able to take part in shows and the theater says its shows for young children help overcome age, developmental and language barriers.
Where’s the best place to catch a show in Atlanta?
The Fox Theatre is called the “Fabulous Fox” for a reason. The old movie palace is a beautiful place to see all kinds of performances. But if you can’t find a babysitter, or if you want to make sure you’ll find a show your kids can sit through, The Alliance Theatre, which is part of the Robert W. Woodruff Arts Center, might be a better option.
