About To Kill a Mockingbird Tickets
To Kill a Mockingbird is perhaps one of the most well-known pieces of literature to ever grace the world’s bookshelves. In fact, a Library of Congress survey on books that have most impacted people’s lives ranked To Kill a Mockingbird second only to the Bible. A story that explores racism in America and the overall morality of humans, To Kill a Mockingbird took home the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1961. The novel was soon made into a film in 1962 and, now, folks can see the story played out in an entirely new light in a gripping live performance. Written by award-winning screenwriter, producer, playwright, and director Aaron Sorkin, To Kill a Mockingbird is adapted from Harper Lee’s 1960 novel. To Kill a Mockingbird features characters based on folks in Harper Lee’s own life – from Atticus Finch, a lawyer based on Lee’s father, to Scout Finch who is based on Lee herself. Set in the small fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930s, To Kill a Mockingbird dives deep into themes that are still relevant today. The original novel revolves around Atticus Finch, a lawyer who is asked to defend an innocent black man accused of raping a young white woman. From being able to separate good from evil to the destructive consequences of social inequality, this show brings to life important issues that many folks in our society still struggle with today. The play opened with acclaimed actor Jeff Daniels as Atticus Finch and Celia Keenan-Bolger as Scout. One of the most striking differences from both the original book and film is that both of the Finch children are played by adults who actually help to narrate the play. The Harper Lee estate actually filed a lawsuit against the play's production company on the basis that the storyline deviates too much from Lee’s original novel. The matter was settled in May 2018. Sorkin has said of the show that “there is no event in the play that doesn't occur in the book. I haven't added new things. But. . . it's going to be a new look at familiar material. ” While Harper Lee passed away in February of 2016, her memory lives on by way of this play and the many who still read her original novel. To Kill a Mockingbird is a Broadway show that is not to be missed – from the incredible cast to the creative staging and powerful dialogue.
