About The B-52s Tickets
The B-52’s, one of the most distinctive and flamboyant bands of the new wave era, formed in Athens, Georgia in 1976. The original lineup included Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, Cindy Wilson, Ricky Wilson (Cindy’s brother) and Keith Strickland. Their first jam session reportedly took place after sharing a tropical flaming drink at a Chinese restaurant—an origin story as quirky as the band itself. With their retro-futuristic sound, wild beehive hairstyles and kitschy aesthetic, they quickly stood out in the local music scene and gained a devoted following.
Their self-titled debut album, released in 1979, featured the breakout hit “Rock Lobster,” which showcased their unique blend of surf rock, punk energy and sci-fi camp. The song’s infectious groove, nonsensical lyrics and animal sound effects made it a cult favorite and propelled the band to international attention. The album became a cornerstone of the burgeoning new wave movement and solidified the B-52’s as more than just a novelty act—they were musical innovators with a distinct voice and style.
Tragedy struck in 1985 when guitarist Ricky Wilson died of AIDS-related illness, a loss that deeply affected the band. Despite this, they regrouped, and their biggest commercial success came in 1989 with the release of Cosmic Thing. The album included massive hits like “Love Shack” and “Roam,” both of which became dance-floor staples and MTV favorites. The album went quadruple platinum and introduced the band to a new generation of fans while showcasing their ability to evolve musically without losing their quirky edge.
Over the decades, the B-52’s became synonymous with fun, irreverence and fearless self-expression. They remained a staple of festivals and pride events, and their influence can be heard in countless pop and indie acts that followed. In 2022, they launched their farewell tour, celebrating over 40 years of music that defied convention and embraced joy. Even as they step back from the spotlight, the B-52’s legacy as boundary-pushing, genre-defying pioneers endures.
