About Oklahoma Tickets
In 1943, Oklahoma reinvented the musical. The first musical written by the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein collaboration, Oklahoma is based on Lynn Riggs’ 1931 play Green Grow the Lilacs. After opening March 31, 1943, the box office smash hit ran for a then unprecedented 2212 performances. Audiences fell in love with Oklahoma, and thus began Rodger’s and Hammerstein illustrious career as a Broadway creative duo. Over 800 songs, and more than 30 Tony Awards later, many credit their unprecedented success to the popularity of Oklahoma. In 1955, Oklahoma was adapted for the big screen, earning two Academy Awards. Rodgers and Hammerstein also won a special Pulitzer Prize for Oklahoma in 1944. Oklahoma ran for 5 years, a Broadway record that would not be broken until My Fair Lady over a decade later in 1956. Oklahoma was the first U. S. cast album to feature the original Broadway cast, released by Decca Records in 1943. The Oklahoma cast recording sold over a million copies, setting the standard for the production of original cast recordings of Broadway musicals. Since the original production of Oklahoma preceded the founding of musical achievement awards available today, the original 1943 production didn’t earn any theatrical awards. Subsequent revivals, however, have been well-received, prompting the creation of the Special Tony Award given to Oklahoma for its 50th anniversary. The Broadway hit has earned numerous awards from the Critics’ Circle Theatre Award for Best Musical (1998) to the Laurence Olivier Award in several categories. Now celebrating its 75th Anniversary, the 2019 Oklahoma revival is directed by Daniel Fish in an intimate and immersive style that includes chili and cornbread served during intermission, celebrating the musicals humble beginnings. The 75th Anniversary revival of Oklahoma opened at Circle in the Square Theatre on Broadway, with the first preview showing on March 19, 2019. Oklahoma officially launched on April 7, 2019. Show days and times vary, but Oklahoma typically shows Tuesday-Friday at 8 pm, Saturdays 2 pm and 8 pm, and Sundays at 3 pm. Occasional weekday matinees are available, but days and times vary. Weekday matinees can be found on the calendar when purchasing tickets. Times and dates are always subject to change, so make sure you check your tickets before you head to the theater.
