Cirque du Soleil’s Crystal features the company’s very first experience on ice. This is Cirque like never before. The show is centered on the heroine, Crystal, as she navigates her world with the help of her imagination and her magical pen. Crystal officially debuted in Cirque du Soleil’s home country of Canada in December of 2017 after a soft launch in smaller venues around the U. S. The creators of Crystal were inspired by the physicality of ice shows and skaters as they relate to the artistic prowess of circus performances and artists. The result is a production that seamlessly merges synthetic ice ramps with a slick ice stage that performers seem to effortlessly command. Designed to be an arena touring show, Crystal moves from city to city reinventing audiences’ love for Cirque and ice skating. The show is the first production to incorporate ice since Cirque du Soleil’s origins in the late 1980’s. Creators see the show as a natural progression of Cirque’s evolution and inclusion of different forms of artistic expression. The performers of Cirque du Soleil’s Crystal transition seamlessly from ice skating to aerial stunts throughout the show’s two and a half hour run time. The show’s main character, Crystal, creates stunning visual scenes from her enchanted pen. As she brings forth imaginative characters and stunts, audience members will feel inspired, liberated, and empowered. The show incorporates traditional circus acts like trapeze, aerial traps, and juggling with ice-exclusive stunts. Artists launch themselves off ice ramps and glide effortlessly through choreographed ice hockey battles. There’s even a full-length ballroom dance executed on ice skates with precision, passion, and grace. In true Cirque fashion, Crystal achieves personal revelations through the help of an endearing cast of characters. The Clown is Crystal’s imaginary friend, encouraging her to take life a little less seriously. The Shadows represent Crystal’s creativity and subconscious motivations guiding her through life. The music of Crystal is a delightfully moving mixture of original arrangements and lively covers of modern pop songs. As is Cirque’s custom, all music is performed live and perfectly supports the performers’ feats. The incomparable skaters of Crystal were coached by 4-time world champion figure skater Kurt Browning. Browning worked tirelessly with Cirque producers, set designers, and performers to help make Cirque’s first show on ice. Olympic Silver Medalist Benjamin Agosto also worked alongside Browning to design the skating performances in the production. Crystal is currently engaged in worldwide arena tour. The production typically spends a week in each city with a variety of showtimes throughout the week and weekend.
